Why we should all be kind to each other

“And as we always say in panto, be nice to each other.”

I always remember that being the last line at the panto and even as a child, hearing it always made me feel really happy.

And the more time passes the more I think about that line and how important and true it is.

Especially because the build-up to the election held in Malta yesterday was really heated and intense.

And unfortunately – though somewhat understandably I guess – this has done nothing to promote kindness in a country which is already extremely politically divided.

But everything that’s going on has really reminded me that no matter how wrong we feel someone else is or how much we disagree with someone’s opinion, we should always respect them and we should definitely always be kind.

I really like Ellen DeGeneres because not only is she hilarious, but she’s also extremely inspirational.

And I find that some of the things she says totally hit the nail on the head.

Such as:

I am saddened by how people treat one another and how we are so shut off from one another and how we judge one another, when the truth is, we are all one connected thing. We are all from the same exact molecules.
— Ellen DeGeneres

And:

I would love for the world to be happier.  I think it’s our one thing that we all share.  We focus so much on our differences and that is creating, I think, a lot of chaos and negativity and bullying in the world.  And I think: what if everybody focused on what we all have in common — which is — we all want to be happy.
— Ellen DeGeneres

And that’s so true.

In Malta as we await the election result today and also just in life in general, I think it would make such a difference if as Ellen says, rather than focusing on our differences, we focus on what we all have in common, i.e. wanting to be happy.

Yes you might completely disagree with someone’s actions, opinions and beliefs.

And this isn’t to say that everyone’s actions are always right – of course they’re not.

But I do believe that if we could try to better understand that we can live happily side by side despite our differences, it could change everything.

And this week I came across really amazing words on a board which I just had to buy.

They’re listed as Our Family Rules, but I think they can also apply on a much wider scale.

So here they are – I definitely believe number 6 is really important:

1. Be honest.
2. Pray always.
3. Count your blessings.
4. Bear each other’s burdens.
5. Forgive and move on.
6. Be kind and tender hearted.
7. Comfort one another.
8. Keep your promises.
9. Be proud of each other.
10. Choose to be positive.
11. Speak life to one another.
12. Work hard and always laugh harder.
13. Love one another fiercely.

And I hope that kindness reigns in your lives and hearts always, no matter what you might experience in the future or what you might be experiencing right now x x x
