Apple Chips

I have a v̶e̶r̶y̶  slightly embarrassing confession: I once ate an entire tray of these apple chips in one sitting.

In my defence, it was when I could still eat no more than around 10 or 11 foods. It was a Friday night and Dermot was out. Probably because he didn’t go out much while I was ill, I was feeling a bit sorry for myself as I watched TV alone.

My multiple chemical sensitivity was also at its worst and my reactions used to lead to extreme food cravings. So with such limited choices, it was easy to eat a lot of one thing.

E̶x̶c̶u̶s̶e̶s̶  Explanations aside, these apple chips are simply delicious. And depending on your preferences, you can vary the cooking time to make them crispy or chewy or soft.

It might take some experimenting in the beginning because it really depends on how thin/thick you slice the apples and I suppose it would also vary from oven to oven.

I didn’t actually used to follow a recipe because I used to make them plain. And since they’re so simple to make, I had just read some recipe somewhere and then continued making them regularly. I used to cook them until they were crispy as this recipe from Carrie's Experimental Kitchen suggests. But I never added anything to them or even used any oil/cooking spray (though I used to turn them over halfway through). One tip I had read which I found useful was to switch the oven off once they’re done but let them cool down in the oven to make them really crispy .

But crispy, chewy or soft, I can assure you that they’re a really delicious snack.

So what are you waiting for? Slice some apples, grab a tray and some cinnamon (if you want) and it won’t be long until you have a really delicious, healthy snack. Just be careful because there are some people (like me) capable of eating the whole tray in one sitting. Click here for the recipe.

Is it just me or have you ever been unable to stop until something you had started eating was all gone? Let me know in the comments below. (Really hoping it's not just me).

PS – I love these so much that I had invested in an apple corer/peeler/slicer which is totally unnecessary but fun to have as it gives you sliced apples in seconds.
